The short list for the Man Booker Prize, a literary award for books published in Great Britain, Ireland, and other countries of the former British Commonwealth, was announced yesterday.
Two-time Booker Prize winner Australian Peter Carey will have a third chance with his Parrot and Olivier in America, an account of a French aristocrat and his English servant’s journey to 19th century America.

The other contenders are:
Emma Donoghue for Room, a story of a boy and his mother imprisoned in a tiny room for years

Andrea Levy for The Long Song, about the last years of slavery in Jamaica

Howard Jacobson for The Finkler Question, a comedy about grief and Anglo-Jewishness
Tom McCarthy for C, about a World War I radio operator who escapes from a German prison camp

Damon Galgut for In a Strange Room, three stories about a man traveling in Greece, India, and Africa

London odds-makers currently have Donoghue as the favorite, followed by Carey. Jacobson holds down the long-shot position. The winner will be announced on October 12th.
