“This place I’ve reached, is it truly Ithaca?”

A team of archaeologists has discovered the remains of an extensive three-story building on the island of Ithaca, in the Ionian Sea off the northwest coast of Greece. The complex also features a well from the 8th century BC, roughly the period in which Odysseus, the hero of Homer’s Odyssey, is believed to have been king of Ithaca.
The archaeologists claim that the location fits Homer’s description of the view from Odysseus’ fabled palace “like a glove.” However, there are many scholars who believe that the epic’s characters are purely fictional. Others express doubt whether the ancient kingdom of Ithaca was located on its modern day namesake, Ithaki.
