Seeking Kids to Participate in the Living History Museum!

Kids in 1st through 8th grade are invited to celebrate Black History Month by telling about their heroes from African American history! Participants will research the life and accomplishments of their favorite African American hero and at the “Living History Museum” on February 28, will become that hero! Participants can wear a costume, bring props, play music: anything that will bring that hero to life!

Babies in the Library storytime begins at Miraleste in January!

The popular Babies in the Library storytime is coming to the Miraleste Library every Tuesday from 11:30 am to 12:00 noon. Aimed at children ages 6 – 24 months, and their caregivers, this half hour program includes playtime, a lap sit session with songs and nursery rhymes and stories and board books. Older and younger children are welcome to attend too! This program is on going and no registration is required. For more information, call the Young Readers Desk at 310-377-09584, ext 600.

Here are some tips for making the most of any storytime:

Participate! Sit with your child and model how much fun it is to listen, see, sing, clap and even dance at Storytime.

Discuss! After Storytime, talk about the books, songs and puppets. Conversations with even the youngest children increase their language development.

Explore! Look at books, try a coloring sheet, play with puzzles or flannel pieces, or try our Early Literacy computer stations

Make Friends! When storytime is over, children and adults can socialize and make lifelong friends!

“Arts Galore” Writing Workshop for 4th-5th Graders, Feb. 4

Join us for a fun PressFriends/PV Library District writing workshop for 4th and 5th graders. The free “Arts Galore” workshop will take place on Saturday, February 4, 2012 from 12–4:15 p.m. at the PV Library’s Teen Annex (located next door to the main Peninsula Center library).

As an aspiring news reporter, you will be mentored by the PressFriends group of middle and high school students as we prepare the winter edition of PV Kids News. Bring a book to write a book review, and then we’ll go on a walking field trip to the PV Art Center in the Promenade on the Peninsula and learn how to write art reviews. Each reporter who completes an article will have at least one article published in PV Kids News (either the book review or the art review article).

Registration is required. Space is limited, so sign up soon! To enroll, sign up online.

The Chronicles of Narnia – Did you know…

Did you know that The Chronicles of Narnia were originally published in this order:

#1: The Lion the Witch and The Wardrobe, #2 Prince Caspian, #3 Voyage of the Dawn Treader, #4 The Silver Chair, #5 The Horse and His Boy, #6 The Magician’s Nephew, #7 The Last Battle.

But in 1994, they were reprinted in a different order that put the events of the stories in chronological order, like this:

#1 Magician’s Nephew, #2 The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, #3 The Horse and His Boy, #4 Prince Caspian, #5 The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, #6 The Silver Chair, #7 The Last Battle

The nice things is that these books can really be read in any order! Each book is a complete story with no cliff hangers gives enough background so you won’t be confused if you haven’t yet read an earlier book.

A+ Research Skills Appointments

Stop by the Peninsula Center Library Young Reader’s Desk to fill out an Appointment Request Form or print it out and bring it in for your very own free training session! All A+ appointments are held at the Peninsula Center Library. Appointments are not for personal tutoring or homework assistance, but rather for research skill building. Sessions may include an overview of online resources, how best to search our library catalog and the Internet and how to create effective search strategies. Appointments are for elementary, middle and high school students. Parents and teachers are welcome too. Group appointments can also be made. Read the Summer Issue of “PV Kids News”

After attending a fun, three-hour journalism workshop on July 9 at the Palos Verdes Library District (PVLD), a group of 34 local elementary school students has published the Summer 2011 PV Kids News.

The 20-page newsletter features book reviews and interviews with stage director Debra Attridge, librarian Michael Barb, and ophthalmologist Raj Dugel. The young reporters will be attending 3^rd through 5^th grades in the fall at a number of local elementary schools: Cornerstone, Dapplegray, Hermosa Valley, Lunada Bay, Mira Catalina, Montemalaga, Pointe Vicente, Soleado, St. James School, St. John Fisher, Taper Avenue and Vista Grande.

The PressFriends community service group conducted the workshop, which was co-sponsored by PVLD. Among the PressFriends mentors were 10 students from Peninsula High and Palos Verdes High, along with seven students from Ridgecrest Intermediate and Miraleste Intermediate Schools.

The Talent Show will take place at the Peninsula Center Library on Tuesday, July 26, from 3 – 3:45 p.m. This special event is part of PVLD’s Young Readers Summer Reading Program.

Check out another great issue of PV Kids! This Spring, these young reporters covered the Earth Day celebration at the Promenade and also wrotesome great features on everything from the Diary of a Wimpy Kid movie to tips on how you can make the world a greener place! The 16 page newsletter is the 6th such publication to result from a series of free workshops conducted since July 2009 by the PressFriends community service group, and co-sponsored by PVLD.

Summer Reading Program starts June 1st!

Wow! Summer is coming, and it’s time go to any PVLD library and join the Summer Reading Program! This year, we’re calling it ”One World, Many Stories, ” and any kids can join, from toddlers, right up to 6th graders! Just drop by the library any time after June 1 and we’ll give you all you need for a summer of reading fun: a reading log, book bag, bookmark and even a coupon for Legoland! Then, all summer long: at home, at summer school, even on vacation, just keep track of the number of minutes you read and you’ll earn a collection of all new, super cool patches And best of all, we have a awesome collection of books for kids of all ages – fiction and non fiction, audio books, and even e-books. There’s no tests, no book reports, and you can read any books you like (even books from home!)
