There's still plenty of time to join the Summer Reading Program!

Have you joined the  the Palos Verdes Library District’s Summer Reading Program? It’s easy! Drop by Malaga Cove, Miraleste or Peninsula Center Library to pick up a free book bag, bookmark and reading log.  Read any books you like and for every 2  1/2 hours you read, you can collect a  cool patch. Read 15 hours and win a special certificate. You can read and collect patches through August 31st.  Reading in summer helps prepare kids for the school year and it’s fun too. Preschool children can join too, and earn patches when they listen to stories.  Check out our huge collection of books for all ages and interests and make a splash reading this summer!

Calling all kid journalists, ages 6 to 16 …  Write an article on any topic that you think elementary school kids would like to read — and submit it by July 20 — and you just might get it published in the summer issue of the PV Kids News.

Although the free Summer Newswriting Camp, co-sponsored by PressFriends and the Palos Verdes Library District, is now full and can no longer accept more sign-ups, don’t let that stop your journalistic juices from flowing!  Research and write a short article (between 150 and 250 words) or a movie review (on a G or PG-rated movie), type it up, and send it to info@pressfriends.org. 

All submissions must be received no later than July 20.  PressFriends, a group of middle and high school students who volunteer their time as journalism mentors, will read and edit all the articles they receive. Although PressFriends cannot promise to publish every article they receive, they’ll do their best to include as many as possible in the next PV Kids News.  A limited number of print copies of the newsletter will be distributed at each of the three Palos Verdes libraries around August 6-9, and an electronic copy will also be posted on this website (www.pvld.mobi/kids) and on the PressFriends website (http://www.pressfriends.org/).

Join us for a Chinese Yo-Yo Class on Wednesday, May 5th from 4:00-4:45pm in the Peninsula Center Library Community Room. 

Instructors Emily Dai and Jennifer Hsu of the South Bay Chinese School will teach us the basics of the Chinese Yo-Yo. They will demonstrate how to combine Yo-Yo and dance into a fun sport. Join us as we learn the fundamentals of this fun and exciting skill.

 Students in 4th grade -12^th grade are invited to attend.

Several community groups will attend to provide information on how we can use our resources more effectively.  Some of the groups include: California Water Services, Marine Mammal Care Center at Fort McArthur, Palos Verdes Land Conservancy, Palos Verdes Library District Facilities Manager, Southern California Edison, Waste Management, and others.

Did you know that PVLD has gone green!  We collect batteries, cell phones, eye glasses, and ink cartridges.  PVLD recycles most items that get thrown in its trash cans, such as paper, aluminum, glass, plastic, and more. Our PVLD Facilities Manager Mr. Charles Crouse will be on hand to explain what the library is doing to Go Green.  For more information about celebrating Earth Day visit the Earthday network .

Whether you are 6 or 16, you are welcome to submit an article to PV Kids News.  PressFriends and the Palos Verdes Library District are offering a kids’ community newsletter to be published two times a year (Fall and Spring). 

In addition, those kids who attend the PressFriends summer camp (August 2, 3, 4, and 6), will publish a summer issue.  For our April 15 deadline, we are looking for your ideas on summer fun.  This can be your favorite books, favorite museums, favorite amusement parks, favorite video games, etc. 

Editorial Guidelines:

• Appropriate subjects: All articles must be appropriate for elementary school kids, and movie reviews will be accepted only for G or PG movies.
• Article length: All articles should be between 150-250 words and emailed in either a Word document or typed in the email to pressfriends@gmail.com. 
• Your information: Include your name, the name of the city you live in, and your parent’s name and contact information, in case we need to ask questions about your article.  In PV Kids News, we print only your first name, the first initial of your last name, plus your city.
• Check the Spelling of Names and Places. Make sure that you get the correct spelling of all the names and places that you use in the article.
• Use a Catchy Title. Look at newspaper articles and see what types of titles are used.
• Include Who, What, When, Where, and Why in your article.  If you are covering a book or movie, tell who the characters are, what the plot is, where the story takes place, when the story takes place, and why the story is interesting to you.
• DO NOT COPY from a website, magazine, or newspaper.  Write the article in your own words.  If you use reference sources, be sure to include the name of the book, magazine, newspaper, or the website address. 

The paper will be posted online by the end of April, and a limited number of hard copies will be distributed at the Miraleste, Malaga Cove and Peninsula Center libraries.

Children ages 6 to 24 months and their parents and caregivers are invited to an interactive hour of play at the library! Library Playdates is a program that brings together babies and toddlers and their favorite adults in a warm, casual setting for unstructured play. Toys, books, and resources will be available.     

Join us on Thursday, March 18, 2010   at the Malaga Cove Library Community Room from 10:30am to 11:30am.

People of ALL AGES are invited to join us as we knit and crochet 7″x9″ sections as part of the Warm Up America! program.  The sections will be collected and combined to form afghans that will be donated to a local shelter.  It’s the perfect opportunity to make a difference in the community, socialize with knitters of all ages, learn a new skill, and enjoy FREE refreshments.

The squares that were made at the November 2009 Knit-a-thon and donated by volunteers have been sewn together into 3 new blankets and donated to a local women’s shelter.  The shelter has been giving them as gifts to women as they move on in their lives.  We’re happy and proud to get to be a part of this!

Come join us and become a part of it too!
