April is National Kite Month. Join us for high-flying fun! Hear a kite story, learn about kites, and make your very own kite. The program will take place on Thursday, April 4, 2013 from 3:30 – 4:30pm in the Malaga Cove Library Community Room. Recommended for grades K-5. No reservations necessary.

Kids in Kindergarten through 8th grade can enter. There will be three divisions based on grade level and each division will have five winners. Winners will be honored at a party at the Malaga Cove Library, receive small prizes from local merchants,  and their winning bookmarks will be displayed in the main library after the contest. Winners will also be invited to ride on the Peacock Float at the Holiday Parade of Lights in December. Terranea has also donated a generous prize for the winners! Winners and their families will be invited to a private Falconry Experience at Terranea to learn about another fascinating local bird.

PV Libraries will have entry forms available March 1st or you can print one following the link below.  Entries must be turned into any PV Library by March 30.

Each student reporter will bring a favorite book to review. The students will also write a story about why their mother is special to them. Every reporter who works with a PressFriends middle or high school mentor, and has the mentor sign off on his or her article, will have at least one article published. PressFriends, at its discretion, will choose the best article to publish in PV Kids News. However, if there is space available, more than one article may be printed. Reporters will take their articles home to type and email back to PressFriends.

PressFriends are middle and high school kids who will work with you on writing articles for PV Kids News. This workshop is a mentoring program, and the 3rd  -5th graders who sign up must work with a mentor. We also play a lot of games, which makes for a fun program for both the elementary school reporters and our teen mentors.

Kids in 1st through 8th grade are invited to celebrate Black History Month by telling about their heroes from African American history!  Participants will research the life and accomplishments of their favorite African American hero and at the “Living History Museum” on February 27,  will become that hero!  Participants can wear a costume, bring props, play music: anything that will  bring that hero to life!

How did American girls have fun before there were video games and Ipods? “Peek into the Past” with us at this fun tea party! We will enjoy lemonade and cookies, as we make  a paper doll craft,  have a sing along, and more old fashioned fun! Once again, we will feature a fantastic display of American Girl dolls. If you like, bring your own  American Girl doll or any favorite doll or stuffed animal. This beloved annual event is perfect for kids age 4 and up. Parents and caregivers will have a special time too!

We have six sessions for you to choose from:

Join us for this monthly storytime  at the Peninsula  Center Library Storytime Room, every 2nd Friday of the month from 11:00 – 11:30 am. This fun half hour will be presented in Mandarin Chinese by partners from The Chinese Library of the Chinese American Reading Association, The South Bay Moms Group and La Ja Ja Kids. Children and their parents will enjoy the stories, songs and games whether they speak Chinese or English or both. The storytime is aimed at ages 2 – 5 years, but older and younger children can attend. No registration is required, just pick up free tickets from the Young Reader’s desk 15 minutes before storytime begins.  Mark these dates in your calendar: Nov. 9, Dec. 14, Jan 11, Feb. 8 and Mar. 8.

The PressFriends community service group conducted the workshop, which was co-sponsored by PVLD. Laura Henry, PVLD’s Young Readers Manager, conducted a special story telling session as part of the afternoon’s activities.
