Recipes for Kids Who Really Like Bugs!

Tired of eating the same old thing?  Make some tasty “bug” treats!  Here are four fun recipes we made at our Wonderful Wednesday Summer Reading Program recently held at the Miraleste Library. 

Cup O’ Dirt Worms

Ingredients:  chocolate or vanilla pudding, crushed sandwich cookies, gummy worms.

Supplies:  clear plastic cups, plastic spoons, napkins.  Serving spoons for pudding and sandwich cookies.  Rolling pin to crush sandwich cookies.

Instructions:  Crush sandwich cookies with rolling pin.  Scoop your choice of either vanilla or chocolate pudding into a cup.  Then scoop some sandwich cookies into the pudding.  Then choose gummy worms to add to the mixture.  Now mix it all together to make your Cup O’Dirt Worms!

Ants on a Log

Ingredients:  celery sticks (peeled & cut), plain cream cheese or cheese whiz, raisins.  Alternative:  Peanut butter creamy or crunchy.

Supplies:  small plates, plastic knives, plastic spoons.

Instructions:  Take a plate and put two celery sticks on it. Then take a plastic knife and spread either cream cheese or cheese whiz on each celery stick.  Put a spoonful of raisins on the plate.  Use your fingers to put the raisins on top of each celery stick to make your Ants on a Log!

Dead Spiders

Ingredients:  Crispy Chow Mein noodles, melted milk chocolate.

Supplies:  Large stove pot for melting chocolate.  Mixing spoon, baking sheet or surface covered with wax paper.  Additional spoons to drop mixture onto baking sheet or waxed paper.

Instructions:  With Adult Supervision.  Melt chocolate over low heat in large stove pot.  Once chocolate is melted, turn heat off, and then add the package of crispy noodles gradually, mixing the melted chocolate mixture over the noodles until all the noodles are covered with melted chocolate.  Then take another spoon and drop teaspoon or tablespoon-sized servings of the mixture onto a baking sheet or clean surface covered with wax paper to dry.  You now have an assortment of Dead Spiders!

 Sandbag Ants

Ingredients:  graham crackers, raisins.  Alternative:  Cinnamon graham crackers.

Supplies:  Plastic bags for crushed graham crackers, spoons for raisins.  Rolling pin to crush graham crackers.

Instructions:  Crush graham crackers with rolling pin.  Spoon crumbs into a plastic bag and add raisins.  Mix together and now you have Sandbag Ants!  Optional:  You can freeze graham cracker mixture first before adding raisins.
