Hormigas en la boca aka Ants in the mouth (2005)

A film noir with a different feel and pace. The action is slow, patient, almost kind. The plot is relatively simple. Martín has just come out of prison after having served ten years for a bank heist and wants to recover the money he gave his accomplice and girlfriend, Julia, for safe keeping. In pre-Castro Cuba, this is easier said than done. The negotiations, betrayals, discoveries and the forward propelling action move into gear slowly as if scared of the harm the resulting speed might cause. It gives us plenty of time to think about and switch perspectives, between getting inside the head of Martín, his adversaries, and his love as their respective fate unfolds.
Lovely period costumes, cars, and noir atmosphere. It’s certainly worth a watch.
Written and directed by Miguel Barroso, whose new work, Un asunto sensible (A Sensitive Matter), is to be released by Random House in March 2010.
