The Peninsula Teen Activity Council met and looked through the excellent entries that were submitted for this contest. It was a tough decision but they chose the photo you see here which was submitted by Claire McBride. Congratulations, Claire! To see the other entries visit PVLD’s Flickr site.

Claire’s photo will be transposed onto canvas and mounted in the Teen area of the Peninsula Center Library and she will also get one to keep for herself.

October is Teen Read Month so — let’s see you reading!

Enter our contest and you could win an enlarged canvas print of your photograph! Plus, we’ll display an enlarged canvas print of your photograph in the Teen area at the Peninsula Center Library.

Open to teens ages (12-18)

• Submit a digital photograph of you or a friend reading. The more creative, the better. Entries must feature the word “read”. You can use free online photo-editing sites such as BigHugeLabs, or Picnik to incorporate text into your photo.
• Entries will be accepted October 10-November 11, 2011.
• Submit your digital photo along with your name and phone number via email to: teensread@pvld.org.
• Photos will be judged for technical quality, artistic quality, and originality by members of the Peninsula Teen Activity Council.
• One submission per person.
• Winner will be chosen by the end of November.

Upon submission of your photo, you agree that any subject of your photo (or the subject’s parents or guardian if under the age of eighteen years) has granted permission to use his or her image in the photo. All photos become the sole property of the Palos Verdes Library District upon submission. Entering a photo in the contest waives your right to the photo and any future inspection and/or approval of future use by the Palos Verdes Library District. Photos entered could subsequently be used in other means of communication (including but not limited to marketing efforts and advertising via Web, print, video, audio or television) by The Palos Verdes Library District.

Are you up to the challenge?? Do you know your way around the library? Can you perform highly demanding physical tasks? Harder yet–can you remain silent for 30 minutes? If you think you can handle it, then come on down to The Annex which will be the starting point of a crazy circuit through the library! We’ll put you in teams, buff you up and send you out on your quests. Solve clues and complete challenges—all while keeping completely silent. The quickest (and quietest) team to finish all the challenges and solve all the clues will win prizes for each team member. Everyone who participates will get a small prize and an entry into our grand prize drawing for an iPod Nano! Stay for food and more fun and at 7:30 pm we’ll hold the drawing for the iPod Nano and more prizes.

Ever wanted to learn to make your own tie-dyed stuff?  Now’s your chance.  Teens, grades 6-12, are invited to tie-dye day, July 30 at the library!  Bring your friends and learn to tie-dye a t-shirt on the Peninsula Center rooftop.  All supplies will be provided!

What do I do?

Beginning June 1st–come to the library and pick up a reading log. Count the number of pages you read and record the books and pages in your log. When you’ve read 1,000 pages, bring your reading log into the library for a $5 Amazon Gift Certificate. You’ll also be entered into our summer-end prize drawing for an iPod Nano* when you sign up and when you turn in your completed log! Every teen is eligible to earn one Amazon Gift Certificate during the summer. The first day to turn in your completed log is Monday, June 13th.

I want more prizes!

1. Get a second reading log, read 1,000 more pages and you’ll have another chance at the prize drawing for the iPod Nano. You can do this as many times as you want up until August 17th.

2.  ¿Donde Esta? Beginning June 20th there will be a weekly clue in the library and on our website that describes a famous book-related place. Guess the place and you’ll be entered into that week’s drawing for prizes like Pinkberry and Jamba Juice gift certificates. You’ll also get another prize drawing entry for the iPod Nano!

3. Take part in the “Silent Library Amazing Race” teen-only event on August 18th (see the library calendar) for even more chances to win cool stuff!
